Toyota Recalls Five 2008-'11 Vehicles for Tire Failure Risk

Just the Facts:

•Toyota is recalling 22,000 2008-'11 FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles in the U.S. for a problem with the tire-pressure monitoring system that could lead to tire failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
•The defective system could fail to warn of tire deflations, said NHTSA.
•Toyota did not provide the federal government with a recall notification schedule at this point.

WASHINGTON — Toyota is recalling 22,000 2008-'11 FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles in the U.S. for a problem with the tire-pressure monitoring system that could lead to tire failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The tire-pressure monitoring systems were not recalibrated correctly and therefore do not start illuminating the low-tire-pressure warning telltale at the required minimum activation pressures," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance (with a federal motor vehicle safety standard) and could lead to tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash."

Toyota dealers will re-initialize the tire-pressure monitoring system. In other documentation filed with the federal government, Toyota said the tire-pressure monitoring system on the affected FJ Cruiser vehicles will be changed because it cannot be reset.

Toyota did not provide the federal government with a recall notification schedule at this point.
